- Escape the Blue Heron Inn.
- None.
This Garrett's training mission, although it's more or less written into the game like a real job. You cannot fail any objective in this mission (except the last one, by dying) since the game will actively reset your character to a preset checkpoint. Don't do that often though, since the gear you start out with (the water arrows mostly) are deducted from your inventory as you use it but not replenished if you fail a training task. Say you fire two water arrows and fail an exercise; when you restart at a checkpoint, those two water arrows are not added back to your inventory ... which makes you wish you saved eh?
Break into the inn.
Start by sneaking past the guard while crouched. Follow the blue footsteps and you'll head past the first guard and complete your first successful sneak. Note that you should keep an eye on your light gem (in the center of the screen) when you move. Sometimes the light that is on the screen does not reflect the light being cast on your atavism and may result in you being discovered prematurely.

This immediately comes into play when you encounter the second guard who is actively moving. Note you cannot kill this guard (or blackjack him as is the recommended method) since you need to pass by this guy by pure stealth. Since the street is lighted in various spots, Garrett needs to stop by the small dark areas along the street to stay out of sight. Move up the street systematically by moving when the guard has his back turned. This should be an easy exericse in letting you judge when is the right time and the wrong time to move out. Crouching will make you harder to see, but you can probably run intermittently to each of the dark areas with no problems.
The final guard is a test on staying silent. The guard can see Garrett if he stands, and the guard can just as easily hear Garrett run across the metal plates on the street. Crouch to solve the sight matter and move slowly (PC players should creep or crouch slow-walk) by the side of the inn to the delivery ramp. Entering the inn is easy - head down the delivery ramp and use the metal gate. Crouch and enter the basement. That was easy.
Locate Lord Julian Using The Hostel Registry.
Inside the basement, note that you can "player hump" (the term used in the Default.ini file) any of the large boxes and barrels and make a helluva lotta noise. Always avoid touching such objects if you value staying alive. Follow the footsteps to your next exercise - lockpicking. This door is easy (three tumblers); later doors have anywhere from four to seven tumblers that require your expertise. Most locks can be defeated using a left, right, left sequence, but some locks (notable the city locks in the city districts each night) are randomised each night time you attempt to undo the lock. Press the weapon attack key once you have the "sweet spot" (the tumbler moves rapidly from side to side) to quickly dispatch the tumbler. When all the tumblers are picked, the door will remain unlocked for the rest of the mission.
Pick up the water crystal in the next room and practise extinguishing the torch. If you really want to be cheap (IGN advises you do), pick up the water crystal and wait. Another water crystal will spawn on the barrel after a set time pass. Keep waiting on the water crystal until you have a full load of 25. It will save you money later on. Put out the torch and practise the mantle. Note, if you fail the mantle, you need to learn that Garrett requires players to press and hold jump to mantle almost all objects.
Climb the first ladder you see and head to the front desk. You cannot be discovered (doing so will fail you). Blackjack the innkeeper by approaching him unil Garrett raises his blackjack to strike (you can tell from the special 'ready' animation). Dump the body in the ladder room. Don't worry, bodies do not sustain damage from falling (unlike the previous Thief games). As before, unconsicious enemies will not "wake up" like in other games ... a blackjack KO is as good as killing an enemy but without the noise or blood. However, killing enemies can also be fun, and we urge you to be creative about it so long as the body cannot be found.
Read the front desk's hotel register and you will find out where Julian is staying. Time to pay him a visit.
Going for the Peony Room.

Head upstairs carefully. Although the training mission doesn't hint at it, enemies sometimes stand still and make few sounds; while going anywhere in Thief Deadly Shadows, it always pays to stop, look ahead, and listen to make sure your destination is safe to head to. If not, you tend to get discovered, then you get killed. At the top of the stairs, you get more exercises about hiding against the wall (useful in some situations) and about loot. Right before you reach the Peony Room, Garrett mysteriously gets a full set of Noisemaker arrows. Lucky you since they cost a butt-load of money. You cannot kill the guard standing outside Julian's room - you need to distract him by shooting a noisemaker down the hallyway then heading into the Peony Room and closing the door (so the guard cannot see or hear Garrett looting the place). You may want to save and engage in your audible deceit afterwards.
Change of plans; Julian is in the Lancaster Room.
A note by the bedside will create this objective. For some reason, the guard outside the Peony Room will also have disappeared after the exercise is done, so go right ahead and head outside and down the hall to the room where you shot the noisemaker. Be sure to check that room for loot before moving on. You should stick around only for the loot in the Peony room before you move into the larger Lancaster room.
Steal Lord Julian's velvet bag.
The large room has some loot on the bar where a guard is patrolling, as well as two annoying light sources - the torch and the fireplace. Extinguishing the fireplace by Julian and the other civilian man is a no-no. You get disscovered. Instead, you should try blackjacking the guard and stealing the velvet bag (which has one of the Rutherford Medallions) by crouch moving towards the pair of idiots and stealing the bag right under their noses. Take care to visit the bar for a piece of loot before leaving. You may also want to save the game.
Escape the Blue Heron Inn.
Before you escape the inn, take advantage of the free water crystals that respawn so many times in the "douse the torch" exercise in the basement. Take your fill of water arrows (up to 25) before going on. You can cut down drastically on your costs for the early missions by doing so. Follow the footsteps to the inn's exit. As soon as the guard (on the right) spawns and sees you, select the flashbombs and use one on him, then head out the door by opening the door and following the footsteps to the exit. Alternately, you can save a flashbomb, and slice the guy to bits but you will take some heavey damage in the process. Either way, you can always run to the end of the mission and leave - you won't be coming back.
